It’s the new Angry Birds. Back in February the New York based game maker OMGPOP launched a little game called Draw Something for Android and Apple mobile devices. It hasn’t even been two months yet, and it has already gone viral. The game has been downloaded more than 35 million times, with its players now having created around three billion drawings. Wow.
Draw Something is the number one free app, the number one paid app and the number one word game in more than 80 countries the world over. And with 13 million active users every day, it has become more popular than Angry Birds, and Farmville.
So what is it that has drawn (geddit?) people in? Well, being a social media game that makes use of the touch screen component of Android and Apple technology, it is a multi player game that allows you to find people and play against them. Give your username to your friends who also have the app, and you can play with them too. Even if they are halfway around the globe.
The genius is, you don’t have to be good at drawing to play it. You aren’t marked on your performance, and you can remain anonymous if you don’t want anyone to know how bad you are at drawing.
You can create games too. Choose a word and attempt to draw it. Then the other user has to decode and work out what word your drawing is depicting. You get rewards too, in the shape of coins, which will allow you to buy extra colours and bombs that rid the game of letters that clue the opposite player in on the word you used.
Give it a go. Apparently the most popular words to use are starfish, pregnant, six pack and hangman so … maybe try and be original?
