Blizzard Bans 320,000 Gamers From Battle.net

Posted on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 in Gaming, Internet by SaulMartin

Yesterday was a bad day to be a hacker, cheater, exploiter or digital nere-do-well. Game company Blizzard announced that it had banned over 320,000 supposed hackers from Diablo II and Warcraft III. The suspected CD keys will be disabled for a month, and repeat offenders will suffer a perma-ban from battle.net. According to Blizzard, many of the banninations are a result of tips received from other gamers on Battle.net’s report page, which you can visit here.

The forum post that announced the bannings reads:

We would like all players to remember that abuse of unintended mechanics and/or use of third party programs is a violation of the agreement made when signing on to Battle.net, and can subject your account to disciplinary action up to and including a permanent ban of its access to the service. These types of activities can severely impact the stability of our servers, and we’ll continue to aggressively monitor Battle.net in order to protect the service and its players from the harmful effects of cheating.

Although no specific were mentioned by Blizzard, I assume most of the cheaters were running third-party software that gives them an unfair advantage through wall-hacks and the like. I’m also assuming that this is a pro-active attempt to clean up Battle.net of some its worst offenders before high-profile games like Starcraft II and Diablo III are commercially available. Also: I dislike people who cheat.
