11 Must Have Firefox Addons

Posted on Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 in Internet by Nick

With a new, clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop this weekend, I had a clean Firefox with no addons in front of me. So with that, I installed 11 must have addons.

NoScript
I originally didn’t think about this addon until one day Chris Coyier suggested turning javascript off for most sites. So I installed this (on Windows 7) and to my surprise, it has saved me a few times from surprise XSS attacks. I use it with all scripts running though…

Adblock Plus
I’m torn with this one. In one hand I hate adds, while in the other I rely on them to pay for the hosting. So it boils down to whether you are willing to pay for that free content your reading, which in most cases for me, is unfortunately no. So while I recommend this one, if you do use it, turn off for Newb Wired please.

Greasemonkey
Greasemonkey is like an addon platform all in its one rights.

WOT
Almost the same case with the NoScript addon, WOT was something that I really never payed attention until now. Having this installed makes the web feel a whole lot safer (not that is wasn’t before. It’s just that whole state of mind thing).

Download Statusbar
More so a usability thing than anything, Download Statusbar helps the process of checking up on those downloads. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve exited Firefox while a file was still downloading

After the Deadline
A spell checker for the rest of us, After the Deadline checks your form for example and will underline the grammar mistakes and spelling errors.

Lazarus
This addon saves me regularly, from forms that expire to accidentally refreshing the page (resulting in an empty form).

Stylish.
Installed originally just for Reddit, Stylish makes ugly websites a whole lot nicer.

TabRebamizer
Sometimes I’m a bit paranoid and other times I don’t won’t people seeing what I’m doing, so this comes in handy. With just a right click you can rename that tab so ‘Some Adult Video Site’ becomes ‘Google’ for example. A neat thing is you can have it rename a site automatically.

FEBE
Firefox doesn’t have a great backup system and the new Sync addon has never worked for me so far. FEBE has always worked for me though, so why change something that works.

SkipScreen
I download files off of Rapidshare and Megaupload a lot, so obviously this helps.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below.
