Microsoft showed off Mango, the next version of it’s Windows Phone 7 software. Mango has over 500 new features ranging from multitasking to smoother integration of social services like Twitter and Facebook. The free update will be out sometime this fall.

Some of the more notable features and apps are:

  • Threads – switch between text, Facebook chat and Windows Live Messenger within one conversation.
  • Groups – lets users put contacts in one place so they can see the latest status updates from the start screen and quickly text, email or instant message the whole group.
  • Linked inbox – puts multiple email accounts in one linked inbox
  • App Connect – allows applications to appear when they are relevant to a users search query
  • Multitasking – Switch between apps running in the background
  • Internet Explorer 9 – support for HTML5 and hardware acceleration
  • Local Scout – provides nearby restaurants, shops, an activities in the area around you

Windows Phone 7 has been off to a slow start though, but Microsoft hopes to change that with the above software update and better hardware with Acer, Fujistu, and ZTE coming aboard. Also announced is that new Windows Phone 7 models will be powered b Qualcomm Snadragon processors.

I personally never considered buying a Windows 7 Phone during my phone hunt, but after playing around with a friend’s phone recently, I would have.
